Classic Potato Dishes That Still Look Great On A Plate!

classic potatoes recipes

A potato is a wonderfully versatile thing. You can bake it in the oven, turn it into chips or use it in pancakes and curries. But you can also do rather fancy things with a spud. Ever watched Masterchef and seen delicious roast beef served with gratin dauphinois? You gotta admit, the whole thing looks great and the dauphinois looks every bit as good as the meat. Actually, you could almost eat the dauphinois as a main dish on it’s own!

If you have ever wanted to cook a potato dish that is fairly close to a classic recipe then no problem –  I’ve found three great videos that show you exactly how to do it.

Jamie Oliver’s quick version of gratin dauphinois, (also know as potato dauphinois) is a real easy dish to create. Perfect for serving with a roast, especially during the chilly months. The Wikipedia definition says that, “Gratin dauphinois is a traditional regional French dish based on potatoes and crème fraîche, from the historic Dauphiné region in south-east France. There are many variants of the name of the dish, including pommes de terre dauphinoise, potatoes à la dauphinoise and gratin de pommes à la dauphinoise” .  So at least you know where the name come from.

The scalloped potatoes from Chef’s Tips is kinda more like a cake. Layers of potato slices are built up with melted butter and herbs between each one. The final dish is squashed, cooked and chilled before frying in a pan. This recipe takes longer to make but by looks of it, well worth waiting for.

The video from Food Wishes features a classic European/English recipe – fondant potatoes. There are several processes to go through but in the end you have something rather special on your plate. Again, it’s a recipe that is meant as an accompaniment but it can so easily be a star in it’s own right.
