Summer Sangria

sangriaFancy making up your own drink to serve friends and family at your BBQ this summer rather than just opening a bottle of wine? How about putting together a Sangria? Sangria is traditionally┬ádrunk in Portugal and Spain and literally means “bloodletting” because of its typical dark red colour. There are a few variations of Sangria including white sangria and red sangria plus you have the option of adding many different fruits and adding different carbonated mixers.

Here are two recipes for Sangria – one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic….

White Sangria – Ingredients you will need:

  • white sangria2 (750-ml) bottles white wine, chilled
  • 1 cup brandy
  • 2 navel oranges, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 lime, sliced
  • 1/4 cup superfine sugar

Non-alcoholic Sangria – what you will need:

  • 1 apple, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1 orange, sectioned
  • non alcoholic sangria3/4 cup cranberry-grape juice frozen concentrate, thawed
  • Tiny pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 3 cups seltzer water (or half seltzer and half white wine)
