Great British Bake Off – Biscuit Week

gbbo-biscuit-week

This week is all about biscuits and first up is Biscotti which originated in Italy. These are twice baked biscuits abiscottind the contestants are tasked with making 24 of them of identical size. As usual all the contestants are going for different flavours including Alvin who is using Jackfruit (I’d never heard of this fruit but it’s part of the fig family apparently). I think Paul was a bit concerned about the moisture from this fruit making the Biscotti soggy but he pulled it off! It got very tense towards the end of this task with the timing of when to cut them so they didn’t crumble and getting them decorated in time. Sometimes less is definitely more!

ArletteThe technical challenge this week is to make eight Arlette biscuits. These very VERY thin swirly layered cinnamon biscuits are extremely tricky to make and I think Paul had a slightly evil glint in his eye when he gave out his recipe to the contestants! It’s always interesting to see how each contestant interprets these technical challenges with no pictures and no real idea of what the finished product should look like. The winner of this challenge was Dorret.

So now onto the show stopper and what a whopper! 24 biscuits within a box made of biscuit…rather them than me. Well, there was a whole lot of different architecture going on in this challenge and most of the bakers chose to make their boxes out of gingerbread as it’s good and strong to hold all those delicious biscuits. Nadiya decided to make fortune cookies filled with her own fortune papers. There were fire engines, jewellery boxes and Russian boxes to name but a few boxes! Unfortunately Alvin’s box was more flat pack as he didn’t have time to put it all together at the end, the poor chap!

Star baker this week is Ian and we wave farewell to Marie. Next we can look forward to bread!
